Slowly Slowly – The Level + Extended Album Announcement

A deep and dark guitar line opens up the latest track from Melbourne’s Slowly Slowly. ‘The Level’ is a gritty jam with thrumming drumlines and bouncing basslines keeping the track danceable, and as the chorus runs deep, there’s a tinge of Brendan Urie (Panic at the Disco) vibes to Ben Stewarts low, resonant vocal tones. Lyrically poetic and aching “I’m not in love / Take me by the throat / Choke me til I breathe it” the song navigates trying to stay true to yourself and avoid getting swept away in emotion.

Paired with a 70s music TV show inspired video, complete with epic outfits and psychedelic effects, it showcases the band filming a glamorous music video with Stewart playing the role of both the band’s lead singer Kane Debol and their disgruntled director. Like it’s been ripped straight from an archive of a 1970’s Video Hits episode, the video directed by Kyle Caulfield is as hilarious as it is stunning. Make sure you watch to the end for a tasty treat.

The track comes alongside an announcement of chapter two of the band’s 2020 release ‘Race Car Blues’. The extended edition of the album will include an extra 12 songs that were initially birthed during the original writing process of part 1, but took on a life of their own as Stewart explains, “some of those pieces that didn’t quite feel like they fit on the original album have served as great stepping stones to where Slowly is headed. Chapter 2 pushes the envelope a little further in every direction – heavier, more pop sensibility and a deeper dive into intimate solo songs.

The limited-edition vinyl is available to pre-order from 24Hundred, and there’s even a sneaky feature from Sydney pop-punk act Yours Truly.
